BUSINESS ANYWHERE
GEOLINK, a leader in
mobile satellite communications,
is launching a new and innovative
service: GEOLINK Access.
GEOLINK Access is a
reliable, cost-effective
high-speed Internet access
service, for small and medium
corporations, whatever their
physical locations where
telephone-based or cable-based
Internet access is impossible or
unreliable.
Data exchange: a powerhouse of
the world economy
The world potential of e-business
is very large. According to a
survey by Nortel Network (IDC -
IMF), the Internet industry
revenues (including e-business
services and infrastructure
investment) will grow by 56% a
year and reach US$ 1.2 trillion
in 2003: the 3rd largest industry
in the world.
The growth per geographic area
is: 76% in North America, 118% in
Western Europe, and 78% in
Asia.
High-speed Internet access will
fuel economic growth
Company head offices need to be
connected to their network of
subsidiaries and other offices
all over the world; permanent and
on-line access to the customers'
database, to the competitors'
offers, or to new industry
regulations are nowadays
indispensable competitive tools;
real-time data interchange,
distant learning, Internet
cafés, video-streaming,
remote medical care are rapidly
becoming the bread-and-butter of
any integrated economy. In order
to gain market share, to be more
competitive, to increase customer
satisfaction, or to work in a
more productive way, every
economic actor (businesses,
associations, administrations) of
any country requires a high-speed
Internet access.
High-speed Internet
access should be part of the
Chart of the Human Rights
The vast majority of regions in
Europe, the Middle-East, Central
Asia, and Africa has no access to
high-speed Internet in a reliable
way (and sometimes no access to
Internet at all): the "last mile"
technologies, such as ADSL and
high-speed cable only cover a
very limited area in these
territories.
This drawback is one of the major
impediments to the growth of
developing countries or isolated
areas, since they do not
participate in the world
competitive environment.
GEOLINK Access® is a
new service from GEOLINK
and
is the ultimate solution to this
drawback, on both technological
and economic standpoints.
GEOLINK Access® is a
high-speed Internet access
service by satellite. This
service targets the "prosumer"
and SOHO markets as well as the
large multi-site corporations.
Thanks to GEOLINK
Access®, every company
LAN, whatever their size (from a
single PC to tens of machines)
and whatever the geographic
location of the company, have
access to all the Internet
services (web, email, file
transfer), without telephone line
or cable.
GEOLINK Access® is
also the solution for all
neighbourhood services: every
school, even isolated ones, will
be on an equal footing with their
wealthy city-located
counterparts; hospitals, even
ones located in the upcountry,
with a high-speed Internet
access, will be better equipped
to service their patients;
"Internet cafés" will pop
up everywhere.
Therefore, GEOLINK
Access® improves, not only
the competitiveness of companies,
small and large alike, but also
the overall living conditions
thanks to the quality enhancement
it brings to neighbourhood
services.
A simple "consumer" satellite
technology
To subscribe to GEOLINK
Access®, no telephone
connection, whether terrestrial
or mobile is required; such a
connection is anyway often
unreliable or even non-existing
in some areas.
With GEOLINK Access®,
all is done by satellite, i.e.
without any kind of cable. Unlike
the normally very expensive
satellite transmission solutions
(traditional VSAT solutions,
point-to-point solutions, etc.),
GEOLINK Access® relies
on the digital TV broadcast by
satellite technology.
GEOLINK Access® is
thus based on a consumer
technology, is therefore very
reliable, and allows very low
equipment and data transmission
costs.
GEOLINK Access® is
extremely cost-effective: a
monthly subscription fee gives an
unlimited access to high-speed
Internet; there is no additional
charge based on access duration,
unlike the Internet access
service provided via modems
connected to telephone lines
(moreover very slow). Depending
on the selected grade of service,
the downlink speed can be from
hundreds of kilobits per second
to a few megabits per second,
whereas the uplink speed can
reach more than 100 kilobits per
second.
GEOLINK Access®:
numerous applications at your
fingertips
With GEOLINK Access®,
you are permanently connected to
the Internet, without limitation
on the transmitted data size.
All Internet-based (TCP/IP)
applications are
available:
Web-browsing,
Send
and receive all kinds of data
files (*) using ftp or any other
Internet application protocol,
and if needed in a completely
end-to-end secured
way,
Use
e-mail with an almost unlimited
number of mailboxes; if required,
the exchanged mails can be
protected and secured from one
end to the other,
All
kinds of « instant messaging
» (ICQ,
),
Real-time
applications: videoconferencing,
Netmeeting,
(*)
files can be transferred in
multicast (video-conference,
e-learning), unicast (from a
company HQ to a single site),
etc.
GEOLINK offers the
GEOLINK Access® the
possibility to use his services
as a VPN ("Virtual Private
Network") that can be used as an
Intranet. The remote
GEOLINK Access®
locations of Company X (these
locations can be in Africa, in
Central Asia, as well as in
Europe) exchange data with the
GEOLINK Access® hub,
without having direct access to
the Internet; the GEOLINK
Access® hub identifies
the IP addresses of the remote
GEOLINK Access®
locations, and then route the
data to the Company X
headquarters via a secured
Internet link. Therefore all
Company X remote locations and
headquarters are using a single
Intranet, under the guise of a
VPN. Company X remote locations
are nevertheless able to access
the public Internet via the
Company X headquarters' public
Internet access: the Company X
headquarters therefore holds the
public Internet access rights of
all its remote locations (for
instance, disabling public
Internet access to some of its
remote locations, if so
decided).
GEOLINK Access®: a
simple "wireless" technology with
ADSL-like capabilities
download
link speed: up to 2,048
kbps,
easy
to install: no cabling or
telephone line connection is
required,
low
terminal equipment cost,
a
versatile service,
quality
of service: GEOLINK
Access® is always available
and the service is directly
interfaced with the Internet
backbone via the GEOLINK
Access® hub.
With
GEOLINK Access®, you
benefit from "customized"
services while controlling your
costs
GEOLINK Access®
enables to plan the company
communication budget since the
communication costs are
independent of the communications
duration and data size:
GEOLINK Access® offers
a high bandwidth suitable for
intensive use, while remaining
connected non-stop.
GEOLINK Access®
provides various grades of
service meeting the different
traffic pattern requirements.
These grades of service fit the
needs of individuals, of small
and medium enterprises, as well
as of large corporations.
For a fixed monthly fee, a single
PC or tens of PCs may access the
Internet 24 hours a day, without
putting any upper limit on the
size of the transmitted
data.

In
a few hours, local satellite dish
technicians install a satellite
dish and the terminal equipment
connected to the PC or the
company LAN. Once installed and
commissioned, the terminal
communicates two-way by satellite
with the Europe-located Hub. This
hub is directly connected to
worldwide Internet backbone,
offering a high-speed Internet
access to the users of the PCs
connected to the
terminal.
